Adding the Degree Symbol to Web Pages and Documents

This seems to be difficult to do when the degree symbol is needed so I put it on my webpage so I can find out how to do it. I'm not sure why, adding the degree symbol (that's this symbol º which represents both thermal and angular degrees) presents people with more difficulty than any other symbol but it seems to - maybe because scientists and engineers find themselves wanting to use if often and they're not not normally proficient in desktop publishing or Web development.

Anyway, on to adding the degree symbol.

HTML

If you want to add the degree symbol to a web page your best bet is to add the following to the HTML code of the page:

º
This is a pretty fool proof and works with all browsers
Word processors

Most word processors will add the degree symbol to the document if you hold down the ALT key while typing 167 on the numeric keypad (not on the numbers along the top of the keyboard).

ALT + 167
Most modern browsers will also display the degree symbol if you use ALT + 167.

Microsoft Office products

Microsoft Office products also understand another key-combo - ALT + 0176. Remember again that you have to type this on the numeric keypad and not using the numbers at the top of the keyboard).
